We are committed to providing our customers with locally roasted coffee and a place where community and sustainability are foundational to our being.
Our Story
In 1995, I lived in Seattle during my college summer break. I spent a lot of time meeting friends in coffee shops. I explored the unique environments and realized these places aren't just about getting a cup of coffee, they are about truly experiencing and savoring coffee and building community. You could spend hours there reading by yourself, meeting friends, or making new ones. These were places where people could work (before co-working), where poets could write, artists could draw, and a couple could hold hands in a cozy little nook that is ever so common in Seattle coffee shops.
Seattle’s coffee culture has set a high standard and I’ve carried those experiences with me throughout the years. My personal experiences have evolved into my vision for The Place Above the Notch. We will be creating a space that captures the essence of community, creativity and of course, a love for coffee. The Place Above the Notch will give our patrons a behind-the scenes experience and deeper connection to their cup of coffee by providing the unique experience of watching the roasting process for our coffee and helping us curate the perfect cup through tastings. The Place will also have The Space, a unique coworking area. We are excited to be a thriving hub for coffee lovers, creatives, professionals and community enthusiasts alike.

The Space
The Space Above the Notch is a dedicated coworking space located in The Place. Monthly, weekly, daily and hourly memberships are available, offering comfortable workspace, separate phone booths for private calls, high-speed internet, discounted coffee at The Place, and access to networking and educational opportunities. Roasted
ROASTED Above the Notch is the North Country's sustainable, community-minded roastery. Based at The Place Above the Notch, we start with a Diedrich IR-5 roaster and green beans from shade grown, fair-trade sources to create roasts that are community-tested. We want to ensure that our roasts reflect local tastes and include a nod to the history and culture of the region. Do you have a local story or hero we can celebrate? Is there a preference for bold coffee? Tell us! Stay tuned for our first community tasting where we will test out our very first roasts with our closest friends, family and neighbors.
